The first time I head of the one man deathgrind band Macabre Demise, I couldn't believe I'd not heard of them sooner! The music is right up my alley, fitting in well with my Benighted and Cryptopsy records. Macabre Demise started off as a project of Andreas Rieger out of Landshut, Germany in 2007. Andreas took the project live for shows in 2010, and since then he's been bringing the Macabre Demise flavor of deathgrind to the world.
With now three LPs under his belt, not to mention a myriad of EPs, demos, splits and a compilation, Macabre Demise have quite a backlog of material to discover and enjoy. The latest release, Awakening, dropped January 16th on digital and CD. The release has 11 tracks and weighs in at about 32 minutes. Awakening is your textbook deathgrind release, with the technicality you'd expect from some of the more complex death metal bands on the scene mixed with the ferocity of grindcore.
Awakening begins with some slight atmosphere in their intro, and then slaps you right in the face with the title track, Awakening. The production on the album is a major step in the right direction, with the drums sounding crisper, and it seems as though Andreas has honed into what he wants the guitars to do as well. That's not to say that good things don't come in threes, as each of his full lengths are awesome pieces of deathgrind. You can also hear that on some of his past releases he layered vocals for effect, which I did not catch on Awakening at all.
Check out the title track below.
My takeaway would be that Awakening is definitely Macabre Demise's strongest material to date! If you like what you hear, be sure to check out Macabre Demise's Facebook page as Andreas updates what shows they'll be at. Hail metal, y'all.
