Band: Rivetskull
Album: Trail of Souls
Label: Self Release
Genre: Heavy Metal
With an ever growing list of bands joining the army of NWOTHM acts, it may seem as though we've heard it all before. Rivetskull seek to challenge that notion, and with their latest record Trail of Souls, I'm inclined to hear them out.
Released February 7th, 2020, Trail of Souls gives us classic heavy metal with a modern swagger to it. I was given the chance to speak with guitarist Mark Plog about the record, here is that below:
Wicked Metal Review: First off, I love the record. Trail of Souls has such a unique yet classic sound to it.
Mark: It is nice to know when our music connects with people. It is a reflection of our own personal musical history passed through the filter of time.
WMR: I know that you have a variety of influences, from DIO to Rainbow. Was there always that purpose behind you to emanate the classic metal sounds, or was that something that grew for you over time?
Mark: The classic metal sounds and influences are really a product of our desire to reconnect with the music we grew up with. Music is often driven by trends and many musicians are always trying to reinvent themselves to match something "new." We simply allowed ourselves to be ourselves and naturally our influences come out on top.
WMR: Your record deals a lot with the theme of narcissism in life, was there a particular person that you are referencing?
Mark: Everyone has experienced a narcissist in one form or another. It shows up in relationships, in business and very notably in politics and the people that have achieved power. The song is about the worst kind of narcissism that leads to fascism and dictatorship through violence. The song was in part inspired by the current president of the United States, the use of Mussolini in the video is meant as a warning of where unchecked narcissism can lead – to fascism. We would like to believe that can’t happen here and don’t think it will, but those who forget history are destined to repeat it.
WMR: How are you spending your time during quarantine?
Mark: Home. We are all doing what we can to get this planet back on track so we can get out there and do what we love – play music. The upside is we all have home studios and can write and exchange music. We have already demoed 6 new songs that we are working on. My guess is there will be a glut of new music next year from all the quarantined musicians.
WMR: What are your plans looking to the future?
Mark: Based on the way the world is right now, I think our plan is to work on a new album for release later this year or early next and then start getting out and doing gigs. We all love to travel and look forward to doing some shows wherever they will have us.
Thanks again to Mark for taking some time to talk to us today! Be sure and check out their new video for "Narcissus" off of the Trail of Souls below.
