Band: Shards of Humanity
Album: Cold Logic
Label: Unspeakable Axe Records
Genre: Death Metal
Shards of Humanity are setting up to release their sophomore record through Unspeakable Axe Records. Cold Logic is a powerhouse of razor-sharp death metal, clocking in at just over 33 minutes of playtime.
No strangers to experimenting with their blend of death, Shards of Humanity have taken the sound they introduced off of Fractured Frequencies, melted it down into it's raw base, and crafted a new sound that is reminisce of mid era Death with a tad of Immolation and Obituary thrown in the mix at times.
Cochran's vocals are a freight train of monstrous power, with lower register thundering growls quickly switching to upper screams full of pain and anger. Cochran also handles lead guitar, with Mercado on rhythm, weaving complex patterns throughout the record. One of my favorite passages they do is on track 9, "Demonic Crystallized Intelligence," where they have a nice slow passage that quickly erupts into chaotic sonic destructiveness. There's not too many guitar solos, but the ones that are there are well thought out and sound killer.
The band is rounded out with McAlister on skins and Younkin on bass. McAlister has an extremely firm grasp of his part, providing the blast beats and fills at a ridiculous pace. I especially love what he provides on track 5, "Cold Logic," starting off with a great use of the bass drums and then changing over to a heavy slower paced beat.
In all, Cold Logic is a fantastic sophomore effort from Shards of Logic. They have a little bit for everyone, straight-up thrash parts and some ear teasing technical riffage.
I'm giving Cold Logic a 8.5/10
