SKYLESS AEONS - DRAIN THE SUN

Band - Skyless Aeons

Album - Drain the Sun

Label - Self Release

Genre - Technical Death Metal

Dissonant hymns for global catastrophe is how the Canadian group Skyless Aeons is promoting their debut full length, Drain The Sun. Honestly, that tagline does an excellent job of summing up the bleakness that is represented in the 45-minute playtime. A great point about some of the underground bands that are looking to make a name for themselves is they don't have that backlog of material that fans know and love, and consequently are free to experiment with ideas in their sound - and experiment, Skyless Aeons do very well.

Some of the more mind-bending passages hearken back to some of Gorguts' earlier material like The Erosion of Sanity. Other times I just hear razor-sharp ferocity in both the instrumentation and in the lyrics. Take Go Forth and Multiply for example; this song takes the ideas of antinatalism (assigning a negative value to birth) and prods it an extra mile. While the musicianship is merciless, the lyrical thought leads you to see that humanity has become overcrowded with people who did not want to be born into this world and have little else to do but to procreate as well.

But who are Skyless Aeons anyways? The band began to form around 2014 with guitarist Nicholas Luck and drummer Martin Burchill. Vocalist Nathan Ferreira and bassist Steve Oliva followed not long after, and since Skyless Aeons has become known for their energetic live shows having shared the stage with other artists such as Ashbringer, The Convalescence, Nesseria and Killitorous.

Rife with melancholy and rage, Drain the Sun is a fitting anthem for our times, and I can't wait to hear more.

I'm giving Drain the Sun an 7.5/10.

As always, if you dig what you hear and want to get more, go pre-order the record through their Bandcamp and follow them on their social media profiles! Links will be below.
