Band: The Wizar'd
Album: Subterranean Exile
Label: Cruz Del Sur Music
Genre: Doom
Heralded as one of doom's best kept secrets, The Wizar'd hail from Australia and deliver mystical driven doom metal that should keep fans of bands like Pagan Altar, Diamond Head, Praying Mantis or any of the early classic heavy doom metal bands happy.
It's a good thing for heavy metal fans that guitarist and vocalist 'Ol Rusty decided to turn this idea into a full fledged record. The plan at first was to simply release the title track as well as "Master of Night" as an EP. 'Ol Rusty, however, was guided by a spectral voice that lead him to the creation of this masterpiece of classic doom.
Believe what you want, I'm glad they took their time with this album. The mixing of the album would have me believe it came out back in the 80's, and the songwriting is first-rate. 'Ol Rusty's vocals are a fitting vehicle for their mystic ridden lore, and the guitar play from 'Ol Rusty and Master Of The Night (yes, really) are just really fun to listen to. I really appreciate that I can actually hear Blackie the Crimson Heretic of a Thousand Eyes's (geezus!) bass guitar lines as well, and drummist Maniac Frodsham doesn't overpower at all, fitting nicely right where he should.
If their crazy names (I love em) aren't enough for you, the substance may still attract you. Their lyrical themes are occult to the rotten core, such as the lyrics from opener and title track, "Subterranean Exile." "Consumed by heartless preparation for war, through sacred sinews our doctrine is scored, armies of darkness repeal the light, a villainous horde now descends from the night."
By and large, Subterranean Exile is a gorgeous record. From the album art to the excellent guitar work, I can't find anything I'm not fond of.
I'm giving Subterranean Exile a 9/10
The record releases on April, 24th. Here are some ways you can support the band.
