Band: Unmerciful
Album: Wrath Encompassed
Genre: Death Metal/Brutal Death Metal
Label: Willowtip Records
It's not every day I get to see a release for a new Willowtip Records band, so when I saw Unmerciful pop up, I knew I had to check them out. After all, Willowtip has been churning out some of the best acts that extreme metal has to offer (Unfathomable Ruination, Vale of Pnath, Mithras.)
Topeka, Kansas based brutal death metal quintet Unmerciful are going to be dropping their third album, Wrath Encompassed, April the 24th. Unmerciful have been around for close to 20 years, and Wrath Encompassed unleashes all of the built up rage and destructiveness that has somehow been caged in all this time. The hyper brutality and extreme technicality they demonstrate is quite overwhelming, and I enjoy that quite a lot! Track 3 for instance, "Predator to Prey," opens with some very much old school Cannibal Corpse vibes, then Unmerciful take that classic sound and mold it to their own use.
Joshua Riley has a very unique and strong approach to the mic, with Clinton Appelhanz and Justin Payne hopping on from time to time to add some nasty layers to the mix as well. Appelhanz and Payne also handle the guitar work, adding in swarms of riffs with enticing leads to bring you further into the chaos. Jeremy Turner and Trynt Kelly round out the destructive sound by adding the thunderous bass and wicked blast beats on the skins respectively. Track 7 really feels like the best representation of the sound that is brutal death metal, with insane amounts of speed, heaviness, complexity and that last scream at the end is perfection. For a brutal death metal record, Wrath Encompassed is as good as it gets, folks. Watch the video for the first single below.
I'm giving Wrath Encompassed a 9/10
